Indira Gandhi Zoological Park – Call Of The Wild That Is Hard To Resist!


Located right in the middle of the Kambalakonda Reserve Forest, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is a national treasure preserving some of the rare species of fauna in Visakhapatnam. Named after the former Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the zoological par encompasses an area of 625 acres. Surrounded by the Eastern Ghats on three sides and Bay of Bengal on the other, it offers a pictorial beauty for the visitors.

The zoological park houses almost eighty species that add up to a number of eight hundred animals that are segregated in different categories such as mammals, reptiles, bird, primates, carnivores, lesser carnivores and ungulates. The zoo is complete with a well panned jungle and water body with in the lay out that provides natural environment for the species.

There are some rare bird species that include endemic birds such as spotted doves, ducks, parakeets, vultures, eagles, peafowls, painted storks and pelicans. The bird group also has exotic speciesx such as macaws, emu, ostrich and budgerigars.

Endemic primates that are there in the zoo are rhesus monkey, bonnet monkey or the common Indian monkey and the common languor. The exotic varieties in this category are mandrill, ring-tailed lemur and baboons.

The category of herbivores include swamp deer, sambar deer, nilgai, giraffes, eld’s deer, elephants, gaurs and wild boars while the exotic variety has hippopotamus.

The carnivores include, tigers, Asiatic lions, leopards, puma and jaguars. The lesser carnivores include jackals, wild dogs and striped hyenas. Apart from these, there are sloth bear, Himalayan black bear.

A section is exclusively segregated for endemic reptiles such as  snakes, tortoise, terrapins, monitor lizards, water monitor lizards, pythons, crocodile, gharial and muggers.

The zoo is also home for nocturnal species such as owls, civets and porcupines. Some of the zoological treasures are preserved in the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park. A trip in to this zoo in Visakhapatnam will be a memorable one for the right mix of scenic beauty and the animal breed that remind you that the world does not only belong to us humans.
